Hi Haiku!

Dear Readers,

Lately, I've been feeling the pressure of writing longer, more "perfect" poems that follow specific rhyming patterns and structures. I've noticed that this has started to create some writer's block since I get ideas for poems, but then don't finish the poems for fear that they won't be good enough. So, I have been exploring writing haikus, since they are shorter poems but still have rules, which has helped me write poems, even if they aren't my best work. A haiku is a form of poetry that follows a strict structure: three lines with a syllable pattern of 5-7-5. Traditionally, haikus are written about nature and they emphasize simplicity, mindfulness, and observation. Here is a haiku poem that I recently wrote:

This one is inspired by the scenery that was around me.

Seventeen-mile drive

Beach and trees stretching miles

Beauty at its peak

Although I could play with the wording, and potentially improve the flow of the poem, I like the simplicity that it brings while still conveying the imagery of the environment that I am trying to describe. In this way, I think that haiku poems are able to create impactful messages through their simple, yet effective imagery.

Hope you enjoyed it!
